Connectivity across India varies a great deal by region: most cities and well-travelled routes have reliable 4G, but parts of Ladakh in particular have limited coverage where only certain postpaid SIMs on specific Indian networks work. We give this guidance honestly rather than promising universal coverage a trip through remote regions cannot actually deliver.
It depends heavily on where you're going
Cities and most tourist routes across Rajasthan, Kerala, Goa and the Golden Triangle have reliable 4G coverage, and an international eSIM or a local prepaid SIM bought on arrival both work well. Remote and high-altitude regions are a different story — Ladakh specifically has limited mobile connectivity, and only postpaid SIMs on certain Indian networks work reliably in parts of it.
What generally works
- An international eSIM activated before arrival, for most of the country
- A local prepaid SIM bought at the airport or in any city, with your passport for registration
- Hotel and cafe wifi as a backup in cities
Where to plan around limited connectivity
- Ladakh — coverage is genuinely limited outside Leh town, and postpaid rather than prepaid SIMs work more reliably where there is signal at all
- Remote stretches of Kashmir's higher valleys and parts of the Char Dham route — expect gaps, and plan check-ins with family accordingly
