Spiti Valley Travel Guide

Spiti Valley sits beyond the main Manali-Leh highway in Himachal Pradesh's far northeast, a high-altitude desert valley closer in character to Ladakh than to the green hill stations further south. Its Buddhist monasteries, some of them among the oldest in the Indian Himalaya, sit against a landscape of bare mountains and river gorges, and the whole valley moves at a slower, higher-altitude pace than the rest of the state.

Spiti is accessible only roughly June to October, once the Kunzum and Rohtang passes clear of snow; the rest of the year the valley is effectively cut off by road. Given the altitude and the driving distances involved, a week or more is realistic for the valley itself, plus time to acclimatise properly before going higher. It is not a good add-on to a short Himachal trip, and altitude sickness is a real risk if the itinerary moves too fast.
