Briefing in Manali
We meet you in Manali to confirm the route, check gear, and brief you on what the days ahead involve.
Drive to the trailhead
A vehicle takes you and your guide, and crew on multi-day treks, to the starting point of the route.
Trekking days
On multi-day treks you walk between camps set up by the support crew, crossing streams, meadows and, on routes like Hampta Pass, a high pass itself; day treks return to the trailhead the same day.
Camping overnight (multi-day treks)
Tents, meals and basic camp facilities are set up each evening by the crew; nights at altitude are cold even in the summer months.
Return to Manali
At the end of the trek, a vehicle collects you from the finishing point and returns you to Manali.
Manali sits at the head of the Kullu valley and is the trailhead for several well-known Himalayan treks. The Hampta Pass crossing links the green Kullu valley to the drier, higher Lahaul valley over a high pass, and is one of the most popular multi-day treks in the region. Beas Kund, a glacial lake near the source of the Beas River, is a shorter and more accessible trek from the Solang valley. Bhrigu Lake, a high-altitude lake trek above the Kullu valley, is another well-known route in the area.
Routes vary considerably in length and difficulty, so 'Manali trekking' covers everything from a long, strenuous day walk to a multi-day camping trek with a pass crossing and stream fords.
Good for
The gentler day treks suit reasonably fit travellers with some hiking experience; the multi-day pass crossings, such as Hampta Pass, are more demanding and suit fit, experienced trekkers comfortable with camping, altitude and several consecutive days of walking. Standard health considerations apply to any trek at altitude — a guide will assess your fitness and previous experience before recommending a route, and will adjust or turn back the plan if altitude sickness develops on the trail.
- Proper trekking boots, broken in before the trip, matter more on these routes than any other single piece of gear.
- Layered clothing is essential — mornings and evenings at altitude are cold even in June and July, while midday sun on open ground can be intense.
- Basic fitness (regular walking or cardio in the weeks before your trip) makes a real difference on the multi-day routes; tell us your fitness level honestly when booking so we recommend the right trek.
- Altitude affects people differently regardless of fitness; a guide will monitor you on the trail and the plan can be adjusted if needed.
Best season and starting point
The reliable trekking window is roughly June to September, once winter snow has cleared from the higher passes and before the autumn cold sets back in; exact opening dates vary year to year with snowfall, so we confirm the current situation for your specific trek closer to your travel dates. Meeting point is Manali town, where your guide briefs you before the drive to the trailhead.
Which Manali trek should I choose?
It depends on your time and fitness. Hampta Pass is a well-known multi-day crossing between the Kullu and Lahaul valleys and suits fit, experienced trekkers with several days available. Beas Kund and Bhrigu Lake are shorter, more accessible routes that can often be done as a long day or an overnight, suiting travellers with less time or a more moderate fitness level.
Do I need previous trekking experience?
For the shorter, more accessible routes, no. For multi-day pass crossings such as Hampta Pass, some previous hiking experience and a reasonable level of fitness are recommended, since the days are long and the terrain includes stream crossings and a high pass.
What is the best time to trek around Manali?
Roughly June to September, once winter snow has cleared from the higher ground. Exact opening dates shift year to year depending on snowfall, so we confirm current conditions for your specific route closer to your travel dates.
Do I need a permit?
Some routes require a permit or forest entry fee, arranged in advance where possible. We handle the arrangements we can ahead of time and let you know about any fee that must be settled locally.
Is altitude sickness a concern?
It can affect anyone regardless of fitness, particularly on the higher routes. Guides are experienced in recognising early symptoms and will adjust the pace or the plan if needed. Telling us about any relevant health conditions when you book helps us choose the right trek.

5/51 week agoOur guide's local contacts opened doors we did not know existed — a block-printing workshop, a temple kitchen at prasad time. The itinerary on paper was good; the day itself was far better.

5/51 month agoSunrise start was worth the alarm. We were through the gates before the crowds and had almost twenty minutes with the place nearly to ourselves. The driver was waiting exactly where he said he would be.

3/51 month agoMixed feelings. The sites were spectacular and the driver excellent, but our guide's English was harder to follow than we expected and we missed some of the detail. The office apologised quickly when we mentioned it.

4/52 months agoReally enjoyable day. The guide was knowledgeable and funny. It did run about forty minutes over, which mattered because we had a train to catch, but they got us there with minutes to spare.
