A sadya is Kerala's traditional feast, a full vegetarian meal of rice, sambar, curries, pickles and payasam served together on a banana leaf, and is one of the easiest highlights to build a meal around while travelling in Kerala. It is naturally vegetarian and can be adapted for vegan or Jain diets with notice.
What a sadya is
Kerala's food is built on coconut, curry leaf, spice and seafood, and is famously strong for vegetarians. The sadya is the state's set-piece feast: a full meal served on a banana leaf, built around rice with sambar and rasam, and a run of side dishes, curries and pickles laid out around the edge of the leaf, finished with payasam, a sweet milk-based dessert. It is traditionally associated with the Onam harvest festival but is served in Kerala restaurants and homestays throughout the year, and is one of the easier ways to eat well as a vegetarian anywhere in India.

Best season and starting point
Available year-round; particularly worth timing around the Onam festival (typically August or September) if your dates allow, when the sadya takes on extra significance. It pairs naturally with an Alleppey or Kumarakom backwaters day.
Is a sadya always vegetarian?
Yes, the traditional sadya is entirely vegetarian, which makes it one of the most reliable feast experiences for vegetarian travellers in India.
Can it be made vegan?
With advance notice, yes; ghee and yoghurt-based dishes are the main adjustments needed.
Do I have to eat with my hands?
No, it's traditional but cutlery is always available on request.
How many dishes are typically served?
It varies by host and occasion; expect a substantial spread of rice, sambar, rasam, several vegetable curries, pickles and payasam.
Is this a good option for a group with mixed diets?
Yes, because it's naturally vegetarian it tends to suit mixed groups better than a meat-forward feast.

5/51 week agoStraightforward and honest. They told us in advance which parts would be crowded and which days to avoid, and the route they suggested was better than the one we had planned ourselves.

4/51 month agoExcellent guide and a well-paced day. My only note is that lunch was at a fairly touristy restaurant; food was fine but we would have preferred somewhere more local. Otherwise faultless.

5/51 month agoDriver was a gem — patient, careful on the highway, and he pulled over for every photo request without a sigh. The car was comfortable and the air conditioning actually worked, which is not a given.

4/53 months agoVery good overall. The itinerary was tight but never felt rushed, and the driver was superb. The hotel on night two was a step down from the others — clean, but the Wi-Fi barely worked. Would still recommend.
