The Jagannath Temple, Puri

The Jagannath Temple in Puri, on the Odisha coast, is one of the char dham of a different, broader Hindu pilgrimage tradition (distinct from the Uttarakhand Char Dham Yatra) and one of India's most significant temples, dedicated to Jagannath, a form of Vishnu, worshipped alongside his siblings Balabhadra and Subhadra. It is best known outside devotional circles for the Rath Yatra, the annual chariot festival in which enormous, elaborately decorated wooden chariots carrying the deities are pulled through the streets of Puri by huge crowds of devotees.

An important restriction applies here that does not apply at most other sites on this page: non-Hindus are traditionally not permitted inside the main temple. This is a well-established and long-standing rule enforced by the temple administration, and it is worth knowing before you plan a trip specifically around entering the temple itself.

VIP and special darshan: how it works

For eligible visitors, the temple administration offers special or VIP darshan tickets that provide a faster or more direct route to darshan than the general queue, sold and allotted through the temple's own official system. These tickets, their pricing and the process for obtaining them are set by the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration and can change without notice, so we do not quote a fixed process or fee here.

What you can see even without temple entry

For visitors who are not able to enter the main temple, Puri still offers a great deal to see, and this is not a case of missing out on the town's atmosphere entirely.

• The temple's exterior architecture, including its towering shikhara (spire), can be viewed and photographed from outside the complex, including from the roof of the well-known Raghunandan Library opposite the temple, a long-standing informal viewing spot.
• The Rath Yatra procession itself takes place on the streets outside the temple and is visible to everyone regardless of faith.
• Puri's beach, the wider old town, and other temples in the area are open to all visitors.
• Konark, with its famous Sun Temple, is a well-known day-trip addition from Puri, open to visitors of all backgrounds.
