Two drives a day
A pre-dawn drive and a late-afternoon drive, each around three hours, run by a private naturalist and driver who collect you from your lodge with time to reach the gate for the opening slot.
Gypsy safaris, by zone
Bandhavgarh runs gypsy (open six-seater jeep) safaris allocated to a specific zone for each drive. Tala carries the strongest reputation but is also the most requested; we advise honestly on zone choice once we know your dates.
Permits booked ahead
Zone permits are released through the state forest department's booking system on a fixed advance schedule, and popular slots in peak season (December to March) sell out; we handle this booking as part of planning your trip.
The drive itself
Slow travel along forest tracks, stopping at waterholes and known crossing points while your naturalist reads pugmarks, calls and other cues. What you see is never scripted.
Bandhavgarh sits in the Vindhya hills of Madhya Pradesh, its core zone smaller and more concentrated than parks like Ranthambore or Kanha, which is part of why it has such a strong reputation for tiger encounters — the terrain simply gives visitors more chances per drive rather than any measurable difference in tiger numbers we would put a figure on. An old fort, still associated with local legend and history, sits on a plateau above the forest and is visible from parts of the core zone.
The park is split into zones (Tala, Magadhi, Khitauli and others), and Tala, the original and smallest, has traditionally carried the strongest reputation, though it is also the most heavily booked.
Good for
It suits travellers happy to fly via Jabalpur and build a Madhya Pradesh-specific leg into their itinerary, rather than those wanting a quick add-on to a Rajasthan or Delhi trip — for that, Ranthambore is the more convenient choice.

Best season and starting point
Bandhavgarh is open roughly October to June and closes for the monsoon core season each year, with the exact reopening date confirmed once we book your permits. The cooler months (November to February) are more comfortable for early drives; April and May are hot but the thinner foliage often makes for clearer sightlines. Drives begin from the park's gates, with your naturalist collecting you from your lodge beforehand — most lodges sit within a short drive of the entrance.
Is Bandhavgarh really the best park for seeing a tiger?
It has a strong reputation among India's tiger reserves, largely because its compact core zone concentrates sightings, but we would never quote a percentage or guarantee — no park can honestly do that.
Which zone should I book — Tala, Magadhi or Khitauli?
Tala is the original, most storied zone and carries the strongest reputation, but it is also the most requested and can be harder to secure at short notice. We advise on the best available option once we know your travel dates.
How do I get to Bandhavgarh?
Jabalpur is the nearest airport, with a road transfer of a few hours to the park; some travellers combine the drive with a stop at Kanha, which sits along a similar route.
Should I combine Bandhavgarh with Kanha?
Many serious wildlife travellers do, since both are in Madhya Pradesh and reachable on the same loop. It works well if you have the time for a dedicated wildlife leg rather than a single-park stop.
How many nights should I plan?
Two to three nights, giving four to six drives, is a reasonable balance for a genuine chance of good sightings without over-extending the trip.
