Palace hotels are former royal residences converted into stays, concentrated mainly in Rajasthan, with Trident Udaipur — the named lakeside stay on our Royal Rajasthan Circuit — a well-known example of the lakeside-palace category specifically. Expect grand architecture and a genuine sense of history, generally at a higher price point than a standard heritage haveli.

How to choose
Match the stay to the trip's purpose, not just the destination: a palace hotel or heritage haveli suits a Rajasthan sightseeing trip, a houseboat is the point of a Kerala backwaters trip rather than a base for it, and a wildlife lodge should be judged on proximity to the park gate as much as on the room itself.
