Best Time to Visit Kerala

This is Kerala's most reliable travel window and the one Experience My India recommends for a first trip. The weather is dry and warm, the hill country around Munnar is clear rather than mist-bound, and the backwaters and coast are at their most comfortable for boat trips and beach time. Peak season within this window runs December to February, when rates and demand are both higher than the shoulder months.

These months are hot and humid, especially on the coast and in the low country. It is the least comfortable stretch of the year for a first-time visitor, though the hills at Munnar and Wayanad stay noticeably cooler than Kochi or the backwaters.

The southwest monsoon is when Kerala is at its greenest, and it is a genuine trade-off rather than simply a season to avoid: daily downpours make sightseeing less predictable, but the monsoon months are traditionally considered the best time for a proper Ayurveda course, and monsoon tourism has become its own niche in the state. Travellers prioritising a therapeutic Ayurveda programme over beach and boat time should consider travelling in this window.

Onam, Kerala's harvest festival, is the state's biggest cultural event, marked with boat races, floral rangoli (pookalam) and a grand sadya feast served on a banana leaf. It falls in the Malayalam month of Chingam, which lands in August or September and shifts each year against the Gregorian calendar, so check the exact dates for your travel year if you want to time a trip around it.

Kerala's regions do not all move together with the seasons. Munnar and the hill country are pleasant for most of the year but clearest and driest October to March, when mist is less likely to close viewpoints. The backwaters at Alleppey are scenic year-round, greener in the monsoon and calmest in the dry season. The coast at Varkala and Kovalam is best for swimming and beach time October to March; the monsoon brings rougher surf and stronger currents, worth respecting even for strong swimmers.
