Rather than a dawn or dusk gypsy drive, the Periyar boat safari runs as a scheduled cruise across the lake at set times through the day, typically a couple of hours per trip.

Periyar Tiger Reserve surrounds Periyar Lake, an artificial lake formed by a nineteenth-century dam, in the spice-growing hills around Thekkady in Kerala. Unlike Ranthambore, Bandhavgarh or the other central Indian parks in this guide, the principal way to see the reserve is by boat: a slow cruise across the lake, watching the forested shoreline for elephants, sambar deer, wild boar and birdlife rather than driving through the forest itself.
It is a tiger reserve by designation, and tigers do live in the surrounding forest, but a boat safari is a poor way to see one — the format suits water-edge and birdlife far better than the tiger the reserve's name promises. Thekkady is workable most of the year, though the lake and forest are at their most vivid in the cooler months (October to March), which also coincide with Kerala's main tourist season. The monsoon (roughly June to September) brings heavy rain and can affect boat schedules and lake levels; we check current conditions before booking. Boats depart from the jetty near the reserve's boat club, a short drive from Thekkady town.
Will I see a tiger at Periyar?
Almost certainly not from the boat. Periyar is a designated tiger reserve, but the boat safari format is far better suited to elephants, deer and birdlife along the shoreline than to tiger sightings, which are genuinely rare from the water.
How is this different from a jeep safari like Ranthambore's?
Entirely different format: a scheduled lake cruise rather than a dawn or dusk drive through forest tracks. It is calmer, more scenic and considerably less physically demanding, but not built around tiger encounters the way a jeep safari is.
