North Goa: Beaches, Nightlife and Markets

North Goa is the busy, buzzy Goa of nightlife, flea markets, watersports and crowded beaches — the side of the state most first-time visitors picture. It suits travellers who want energy: parties, markets and things to do rather than empty sand.

A few days is the usual allowance for North Goa on a first trip, often paired with a day inland to Old Goa and Panjim, and then a move south for the quieter half of the holiday.

North Goa's coastline runs from Fort Aguada up to Arambol, and these are the places that anchor most visits:

Goa is one of Asia's best-known party destinations, a reputation it earned on the hippie trail, and North Goa is the heart of it: the bars and clubs of Tito's Lane in Baga, the beach parties around Anjuna and Vagator, and the Saturday night market at Arpora. South Goa is far quieter by comparison, with the silent discos of Palolem the main event there. Note that Goa's parties can be curfewed or shut down at times, especially around elections.

The newer Manohar International Airport at Mopa (GOX), opened in 2023, sits in the north of the state and is the closer option for North Goa; Dabolim (GOI) in the centre of Goa and connections via Mumbai (BOM) are the alternatives. There is no Uber in Goa and taxis quote steep prices, while the beaches you want are often an hour of narrow lanes apart, so agreeing a car and driver in advance rather than negotiating on the spot makes the days easier.

North Goa's accommodation runs from simple beach shacks and guesthouses around Anjuna, Vagator and Arambol to a denser run of hotels and resorts around Calangute, Candolim and Baga, closer to the main nightlife and markets.
