South Goa: Quiet Beaches and Luxury Resorts

South Goa is the quiet, laid-back Goa of long empty sands, luxury resorts and yoga — the opposite mood to the north's beaches and markets. It suits relaxing, honeymoons and anyone after long empty beaches rather than nightlife.

It pairs well with a few days in North Goa on a first trip: the classic shape is nightlife and sightseeing up north, then a move south to wind down for the second half of the holiday.

South Goa's beach belt is longer, emptier and further apart than the north's, and these are the names that come up most:

South Goa is far quieter than the north after dark, with the silent discos of Palolem the main event rather than clubs or beach parties. What South Goa is known for instead is wellness: it is one of India's great yoga-retreat destinations, with Palolem, Agonda and Patnem forming a well-known heartland for retreats and long stays.

Dabolim Airport (GOI), in the centre of the state, and Madgaon (Margao) train station, in the south, are both closer to South Goa than the newer Mopa airport up north. As everywhere in Goa, there is no Uber and taxis quote steep prices, so a private car and driver for the day-to-day moves and the North-South hop is the easier way to travel.

South Goa's resorts run higher than the north's on average, concentrated around Majorda and other stretches with dedicated luxury properties, while Palolem, Agonda and Patnem keep a simpler run of beach huts and guesthouses geared to longer, quieter stays.
