This ten-day Tamil Nadu itinerary covers the core temple trail — Chennai, Mahabalipuram, the Chola heartland around Thanjavur, and Madurai — then adds Rameswaram and Kanyakumari at the country's southern tip, the extension that turns the seven-day core route into the fuller ten-day version.
From Chennai to the southern tip
Seven days covers the core temple trail — Chennai, Mahabalipuram, the Chola heartland of Thanjavur and Trichy, and Madurai — without rushing. Ten to fourteen days adds Rameswaram and Kanyakumari, or a hill station. This itinerary takes the ten-day route: the core trail plus the drive out to Rameswaram's island temple town and on to Kanyakumari, where the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea meet.
Do I need to dress a certain way for these temples?
Yes. Shoulders and knees covered is the general rule, and shoes come off before entering most temple complexes — stone floors can be hot at midday, so a light pair of socks helps.
Can this trip be shortened to seven days?
Yes, by dropping Rameswaram and Kanyakumari and finishing at Madurai — the classic seven-day core trail.
What is Pongal and does it affect travel in January?
Pongal is Tamil Nadu's harvest festival, usually in mid-January. Temples are livelier but busier around it; worth asking about if your dates are close.
Is this itinerary combinable with Kerala?
Yes — Tamil Nadu and Kerala are neighbours, and a common extension crosses the Western Ghats into Kerala afterwards, taking the full loop to twelve to fourteen days.

4/51 month agoVery good overall. The itinerary was tight but never felt rushed, and the driver was superb. The hotel on night two was a step down from the others — clean, but the Wi-Fi barely worked. Would still recommend.

5/52 months agoThe South India Temple Trail was booked at short notice and they still pulled everything together — driver, entry slot, and a guide who had clearly briefed himself on what we were interested in. Impressive.
