Agra sits on the Yamuna River in Uttar Pradesh, about a three-to-four-hour drive from Delhi, or under two hours on the fast Gatimaan and Shatabdi trains. It was the seat of the Mughal Empire at its height, and that single fact explains everything worth seeing here: the Taj Mahal, the sprawling Agra Fort, and the ghost-city of Fatehpur Sikri, three UNESCO World Heritage Sites within reach of one another. Most travellers reach Agra as the second point of the Golden Triangle, between Delhi and Jaipur.

This guide covers how to see it properly: the Taj at dawn, what else is worth your time, and whether to come as a day trip or stay the night.

Agra is famous, above all, for the Taj Mahal, the white-marble mausoleum built in the 17th century, and the reason many people come to India at all. But Agra is a former Mughal capital, not a single monument. Agra Fort and the abandoned city of Fatehpur Sikri, about 40 kilometres away, are both UNESCO sites in their own right, and the city is known for its rich Mughlai food and its signature sweet, petha.

The Taj opens from sunrise to sunset and is closed every Friday. Go at sunrise: the first hour has the best light and the smallest crowds. Tickets are booked online through the Archaeological Survey of India, with a separate ticket for the inner mausoleum chamber and a higher rate for foreign visitors; on full-moon nights a limited number of visitors can see the Taj by moonlight, booked well ahead.

One full day and a night is enough for Agra's main sightseeing: sunrise at the Taj, Agra Fort in the morning, and Fatehpur Sikri on the way in or out. A rushed day trip from Delhi covers the Taj alone. Two nights let you slow down, add Mehtab Bagh at sunset, and eat your way through the old city.

Agra's food is Mughlai and rich: slow-cooked korma and biryani in the old-city institutions near Agra Fort, and the city's famous petha, a translucent ash-gourd sweet you will be offered everywhere and can carry home.

Agra is safe for visitors, but it has one specific nuisance worth knowing: the touts and unofficial guides who cluster around the Taj and Agra Fort flashing badges. Many are not government-certified and cannot even enter the monument with you. Book a genuine government-approved guide in advance rather than hiring one at the gate.

Agra rewards planning more than almost anywhere in India, because the difference between a rushed midday Taj in a crowd and a still, golden sunrise is entirely down to logistics.
